MARCH 2014

The Girona tourism sector celebrated World Tourism Day with a meeting in Biart Castle (Masarac) on 26th September, bringing together representatives of tourism bodies, organisations and companies.

The meeting, organised each year by the Federation of Hotels and Restaurants of the Counties of Girona on the occasion of World Tourism Day, is an unmissable event for the sector that facilitates the exchange of opinions and impressions on the summer season and other current affairs related to tourism policy. The event was attended by more than 250 people.

A series of celebrations and talks were held over the course of the day. The President of the Patronat de Turisme, Jaume Torramadé, highlighted the forward-looking and economic strength of the tourism sector and the importance of following the road map drawn up for next five years, aimed at continuing the development of sustainable and high quality tourism activity. Torramadé stated that, "to remain a leading destination we must constantly reinvent ourselves. So to me the path seems clear and well defined: we must renovate infrastructures and facilities, invest in training, create and structure new tourism products, and strengthen the Costa Brava and Pirineu de Girona brands by incorporating universally appreciated values such as authenticity and quality. In times of turbulence, uncertainty and competition, it is essential to have a powerful standout brand. We have one, but we need to revitalise it constantly; otherwise we will lose momentum." The president referred to the current state of affairs at Girona Costa Brava Airport and to the negotiations with the airline Ryanair. He ended his speech by reminding the audience that the main mission of the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona is to raise the international profile of the Costa Brava and the Pirineu de Girona and that, in this respect, great efforts are being made to collaborate with all the sectors involved.

The event was also attended by the Vice President of the Patronat de Turisme, Joan Giraut, and the Director of the Patronat, Ramon Ramos. The day ended with a gala dinner for attendees.

Prior to World Tourism Day, on 17th September the President of the Patronat de Turisme attended the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Estartit Nautical Club, together with several representatives of bodies, public and private organisations and business people from the tourism sector who are closely associated with the club. The Patronat de Turisme took the opportunity to acknowledge the work carried out by the Estartit Nautical Club in boosting the town's economic and tourism activity, as well as in promoting nautical tourism on the Girona coast and raising the profile of the Costa Brava brand.
