Tribute to Yvette Barbaza

The Patronat unveils the new Yvette Barbaza Award for Research on the Counties of Girona at a tribute ceremony to the French geographer.

MARCH 2014

On 11th December 2009, as part of the events commemorating the Centenary of the Costa Brava, the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona, with the collaboration of the University of Girona, organised a tribute ceremony to Yvette Barbaza, geographer and author of the first doctoral thesis on the Costa Brava, published in France under the title Le paysage humain de la Costa Brava (1966) and published in Catalan in 1988.

The Yvette Barbaza tribute ceremony was mainly an academic event and pursued two goals: firstly, to recognise and showcase the person and work of this French geographer who produced the most comprehensive monograph ever written on the Costa Brava and, secondly, to announce that the Patronat de Turisme has decided to create the Yvette Barbaza Award for Research to promote and encourage new studies on tourism in the counties of Girona.

The person and work of Yvette Barbaza was the leitmotiv of the event, which featured speeches by Enric Vilert, President of the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava and of Girona Provincial Council, Joaquim Maria Puigvert, Vice-Rector of the University of Girona, Frederic-Pau Verrié, art historian, Joan Cals, Professor of Applied Economics of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and Joaquim Nadal, Minister for Territorial Policy and Public Works of the Catalan Government.

During the Yvette Barbaza tribute ceremony the President of the Patronat de Turisme, Enric Vilert, announced the creation of the Yvette Barbaza Award for Research on the Counties of Girona, which from 2010 will be awarded on an annual basis to encourage research and to deepen knowledge on aspects that have an influence on tourism activity in this area, contributing elements that serve to guide the work of the Patronat and that of the tourism sector as a whole.

The Yvette Barbaza G! Award for Research

As part of the 2010 G! Awards, the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona will present the first Yvette Barbaza Award for Research. The award has been created with the purpose of rewarding the best research project on the tourism sector and its social, economic and territorial context in the counties of Girona.

The award has been set up in honour of the geographer Yvette Barbaza, who produced pioneering work on tourism in our country, and aims to promote the scientific knowledge of this activity applied to the counties of Girona.

For the fifth G! Awards for tourism activities in the counties of Girona, which take place in 2010, the Yvette Barbaza Award for Research will be incorporated among the existing honorary awards (the Josep Pujol i Aulí Professional Achievements Award and the Xiquet Sabater Company Project Award) and the awards for tourism communication of the counties of Girona.
