SEPTEMBER 2023

According to figures from the Eurecat Observatory of Tourism, during the months of June, July and August the province of Girona welcomed 3.6 million tourists who generated 15 million overnight stays. Compared with the level of occupation recorded during the same period in 2022, the destination experienced a drop of 5.9% in number of tourists and an overall increase of 0.5% in number of overnight stays in the various types of tourist accommodation available. These figures reveal that despite having lost 232,000 tourists, overnight stays grew half a point, indicating that visitors to the destination stayed for longer on average. The increase in this indicator makes it possible to reduce the travel carbon footprint and also boosts profitability for local companies.

By markets, this summer saw an increase of two points in tourist occupation by Catalan and Spanish visitors, representing 46% of the total overnight stays. This figure indicates that the domestic market is becoming consolidated.

The French market (with 7% less overnight stays than in 2022) and the Belgian market (with 5% less overnight stays than in 2022) suffered a slight drop. However, these figures were compensated for by the recovery of the British market (with 18% more overnight stays than in 2022) and the growth of the German (with 17% more overnight stays) and US markets (with 5% more overnight stays than in 2022).

Costa Brava-Girona Airport maintained the upward trend towards pre-pandemic levels. Almost 800,000 passengers used this airport in June, July and August 2023, which is 28% more than in the same period in 2022. Of particular note, 40% of the airport’s users were ‘Brexit tourists’, passengers that have returned after three seasons.

The Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board has confirmed that this year’s high season on the Costa Brava and in the Girona Pyrenees was ‘satisfactory’ in general, while awaiting financial data regarding consumption and expenditure.
