MARCH 2014

The Patronat de Turisme has joined the social networks Facebook and Tripadvisor to promote the products and companies of the Costa Brava and Pirineu de Girona tourist destinations with the aim of enabling direct and agile communication with end customers through news, debates and visitor participation.

On 10th July the Patronat started up the Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona group on the Facebook social network. Since then, more than 13,000 members or “fans” (to use Facebook terminology) have registered. Having been set up just over 40 days ago, the Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona group has already amassed more fans than other groups of Spanish and international destinations, such as Visit London (1,021 fans), Gran Canaria (7,800 fans, up and running for over a year), Comunitat Valenciana (5,200 fans) or Madrid Turismo (1,077 fans), to mention just a few. This indicates the good response to the platform amongst Internet users and the high level of interest shown by end customers in the Costa Brava and Pirineu de Girona destinations.

The fan profile of the Costa Brava Pirineu de Girona shows a 60/40 female to male ratio. As for user ages, 51% of users are in the 25 to 44 age bracket, with 29% in the 18 to 24 age bracket.

The Facebook group set up by the Patronat is dynamic and interactive, fostering knowledge of the destination and of the activities and events taking place throughout the area. Competitions have taken place on the Facebook page to encourage participation. Various companies and towns have been keen to take part in the initiative.

Continuing with its promotion of Web 2.0 tools, the Patronat has begun to participate actively on TripAdvisor, the world’s most visited travel website, which gathers opinions and inquiries regarding tourist destinations and accommodation. With this in mind, the Patronat has set up a user profile in English to offer advice and answer inquiries regarding the Costa Brava and Pirineu de Girona destinations. The Patronat is studying the possibility of more actions of this kind, reaching end customers more directly through a more modern and agile approach.
