Promotion of Cycling

Cycling events have helped to promote the cycle tourism offering of the Costa Brava and Girona Pyrenees on an international scale.

In the summer, the province of Girona hosted the cycling events of La Vuelta, the Spanish Downhill Championship organised by the RFEC, and the European MTB DHI Championship. The calendar was expanded with the addition of cycle tourism events such as the Alpinum cycling ride and the Gravel Cerdanya tour, in the Cerdanya region, which brought together professional, amateur and recreational riders.

August 27 and 28, the cities of Figueres and Olot were the settings for stages 5 and 6 of La Vuelta (UCI). The cycling caravan,  made up of more than 3,500 people -including 180 professional riders from 23 teams -generates a significant economic impact on accommodation, restaurants and local businesses. The race reached an estimated audience of 400 million viewers. 

Previously, the bike park circuits at the La Molina mountain resort hosted two downhill competitions at European and national level, establishing it as a European benchmark for mountain biking.

The province of Girona is emerging as a world-class cycling destination, thanks to the joint commitment of public authorities, organisations and businesses to growing the sector and developing cycle tourism as a strategic, high-quality, season-balancing and fundamentally sustainable tourism product. 

The hosting of cycling events in Girona helps to promote its offering and raise the profile of the destination in this field.
