Costa Brava Graphic Image project

The Patronat de Turisme and the University of Girona present the work carried out to date on this project that focuses on advertising approaches to the tourist destination.

MARCH 2014

On 20th April, the presentation of the Costa Brava Graphic Image study took place in the Graduate Hall of the faculty of Arts of the University of Girona before an audience of about fifty students from the faculties of Tourism and Public Relations of the UdG.

The presentation was made by Dolors Batallé, Director of the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona, Joaquim Maria Puigverd, Vice-Rector of Institutional Relations, Society and Culture of the UdG, and the study organisers, Dolors Vidal, Coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Cultural Tourism of the UdG, and Antoni Monturiol, Curator of Girona Art Museum.

Dolors Batallé, Director of the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona, declared that, “tourism posters enable us to follow the evolution of the Costa Brava brand and we can see their importance in showcasing the tourist attractions of our destination for visitors.” Batallé commented that well-known Catalan artists have displayed their particular vision of the area in tourism posters to highlight its attractions for visitors.

Last of all, the study organisers explained the methodology employed in this research study, which will be completed by early summer and will be published in the form of an online catalogue. This catalogue will become a database with the purpose of registering, processing and speeding up future searches for the study material, which will be made available for viewing on the website of the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona (www.costabrava.cat) and on the website of the Centenary of the Costa Brava (www.costabrava100.cat).

On the occasion of the celebration of the Centenary of the Costa Brava, the Patronat de Turisme and the University of Girona signed a collaboration agreement for producing a research study on graphic material related to the advertising of the Costa Brava brand and how it has evolved over the course of one hundred years.

Costa Brava Graphic Image project

Through a compilation of graphic material related to the Costa Brava tourism brand, Costa Brava Graphic Image aims to explain how the graphic image has been presented over the last one hundred years, in the form of leaflets, posters, advertising, local press articles, etc. As such, an analysis will be made of which places on the Costa Brava were the first to be advertised and of how the view of the area in general has changed over time, after which the focus shifts to posters and leaflets that promote particular places within the area.

Costa Brava Graphic Image is a study that will be published this summer in the form of an online catalogue. It will contain information on more than 2,500 items dating from the 1920s to the present day.
