Growing commitment to sustainable tourism in the province of Girona with GTPI membership.
The Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board has joined the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative (GTPI) to tackle the use of plastics in tourism. This programme is backed by the UN Environment Programme and World Tourism Organisation, in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
The GTPI requires tourism organisations to make a set of concrete and actionable commitments by 2025. By taking serious action in a coordinated manner on plastic pollution, the tourism sector can help preserve and protect the places and wildlife that make destinations worth visiting. Along these lines, the Tourist Board will be holding training sessions for the sector, applying specific measures to reduce the use of plastics in promotional actions and will carry out awareness campaigns aimed at tourists visiting the destination.
Regarding the sustainable tourism strategy being implemented in the province of Girona over the past year, the Tourist Board’s Technical Secretariat for Sustainability has been helping to transform the organisation and supporting the tourist companies and bodies that work with the Board in the process of positioning the Costa Brava and Girona Pyrenees as a responsible and sustainable tourist destination.
With its recent membership of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board has taken another step towards achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and implementing the Catalan Government’s National Commitment for Responsible Tourism.
