Costa Brava to bid for the 2022 Ryder Cup

DECEMBER 2014

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Eleven institutions, organisations and companies, including the Government of Catalonia, Girona Provincial Council, the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, the City Councils of Caldes de Malavella, Girona and Barcelona, the Catalan and Spanish Golf Federations, the Spanish National Sports Council (CSD) and the PGA Catalunya Resort, are working together to prepare a dossier which will be presented to the Ryder Cup Europe Selection Committee by 30 April 2015 with the aim of bringing the 2022 Ryder Cup, the world's top golf tournament, to the Costa Brava. The Ryder Cup is a biennial golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. First held in 1927, it is the world's most important golf tournament, with an estimated 140 million euro impact on the economy and drawing an average of 60,000 visitors per day, 60% of whom are foreign. The three-day tournament is on a level with major sports events such as the Olympic Games or the American Super Bowl. Six European countries will be bidding for the 2022 Ryder Cup: Germany, Austria, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Spain. For the Costa Brava, the tournament represents a magnificent opportunity to exploit the tourist potential of the eight golf courses belonging to the Tourist Board's Golf Marketing Club, and to raise the international profile of the destination.
