MARCH 2014

Girona's gastronomy, inextricably linked to the local cuisine and geography, is without doubt a powerful engine of the local economy and tourism industry. It is currently enjoying great success and our chefs are receiving many accolades.

On 25th November the prestigious Michelin Guide presented the 2011 edition of its red restaurant guide for Spain and Portugal, in which 14 restaurants in the Girona area have received 20 stars between them: three stars have been awarded to El Bulli in Roses (Ferran Adrià) and to El Celler de Can Roca in Girona (Roca brothers); two stars have been awarded to Les Cols in Olot (Fina Puigdevall) and the Miramar in Llançà (Paco Pérez); and one star has been awarded to Ca l’Enric in La Vall de Bianya (Isabel Juncà), Ca l’Arpa in Banyoles (Pere Arpa), L’Aliança in Anglès (Lluís and Josep Maria Feliu), Els Tinars in Llagostera (Marc Gascons), La Cuina de Can Simon in Tossa de Mar (Xavier Lores), La Llar in Roses (Joan Viñas), Mas Pau in Avinyonet de Puigventós (Xavier Sagristà), La Massana in Girona (Pere Massana), Botic in Corçà (Albert Sastregener) and Fonda Xesc in Gombrèn (Francesc Rovira).

More recently, on 7th December, the Roca brothers, of the restaurant El Celler de Can Roca, received the Medal for Tourism Merit in the restaurant category. This is an annual award given by the Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Trade. One week later, the University of Girona, at the proposal of the Faculty of Tourism and Communication, awarded an honorary degree to Girona's Joan Roca, chef of El Celler de Can Roca, for producing "a modern and avant-garde gastronomy based on constant research, without shying away from the intelligent use of science and technology to treat ingredients with respect with the aim of preserving the essence of their flavours and aromas".
