The province of Girona received 3.18 million tourists, generating almost 11 million overnight stays during the 2021 summer season.
According to a report by the Eurecat Observatory of Tourism, the province of Girona welcomed 3,177,520 tourists, who generated 10,985,275 overnight stays in the months of June, July and August 2021. Compared with the level of occupation recorded during the same period in 2020, the destination experienced an overall growth of 71.8% in number of tourists and an overall increase of 64% in number of overnight stays in the various types of tourist accommodation available (hotels, campsites, tourist apartments and rural tourism).
By tourist brands, the Costa Brava received 2,865,136 tourists (+72.5% from 2020 and -5.6% from 2019). In terms of tourist occupation, there were 10,073,703 overnight stays (+64% from 2020 and -21.1% from 2019). Catalan tourists generated 4,765,934 of these, tourists from the rest of Spain generated 1,337,237, while foreign tourists accounted for 3,970,532 overnight stays.
The Girona Pyrenees welcomed 312,384 tourists (+65.9% from 2020, and +3.4% from 2019). In terms of tourist occupation, there were 911,572 overnight stays (+67.8% from 2020). Catalan tourists generated 777,246 of these, tourists from the rest of Spain generated 63,942, while foreign tourists accounted for 70,384 overnight stays.
Currently, the Catalan market continues to be the destination’s primary tourist market and it is still growing. The national market is close to recovering pre-pandemic values, but the international market is still a long way from reaching pre-pandemic figures for arrivals and overnight stays of foreign tourists, although it progressively improves. Tourists coming from the French, Dutch, German and Belgian markets accounted for 82% of the arrivals in Girona’s destinations.
