Musical nights of the Centenary of the Costa Brava

The eleven concerts that make up the “Musical nights of the Centenary” are a result of the collaboration of the Costa Brava Music Festivals and the Patronat. Eleven nights of enjoyment.

MARCH 2014

The Centenary of the Costa Brava adopts a musical theme thanks to the collaboration of the area’s main music festivals in devoting specific concerts within their schedules to the celebration of this historic anniversary.

Eleven Music Festivals have collaborated with the Centenary in scheduling a special night for the commemoration. From 25th June, when the “Musical Nights of the Centenary” get underway with a concert by Maria del Mar Bonet at the Banyoles (a)phònica Festival, to 29th August, when the Figueres Acoustic Festival offers a concert by Jorge Drexler, a series of festivals will ensure that this is an artistic Centenary. Concerts by date: on 9th July, Omar Sosa Quintet & Jove Orquestra Athenea perform at the Girona Religious Music Festival; on 1st August, Guillermo Klein and the Girona Jazz Project perform at the Cadaqués International Music Festival; on 3rd August, La Locomotora Negra performs at the Cap Roig Gardens Festival; on a more classical note, on 6th August a Handel concert with Núria Rial takes place at the Torroella de Montgrí International Music Festival; on 9th August, Carles Lama and Sofia Cabruja perform at the Sant Pere de Rodes Music Festival; and on 21st August the Parnassus Trio performs at the Schubertíada in Vilabertran.

Two highly popular and much-loved concerts on the Costa Brava and throughout Catalonia are the Havaneres Concert (colonial sea shanties) in Calella de Palafrugell, on 5th July, and the sardana concert in Palamós, on 25th August. Both events are also celebrating the Centenary.
Finally, the 47th Porta Ferrada Festival, in Sant Feliu de Guíxols is participating in the commemoration of the Centenary of the Costa Brava with a large-scale production featuring renowned international artists and songwriters who, accompanied by the Festival’s Symphonic Orchestra, will draw musical visions of the Mare Nostrum through their songs.

The Festival and the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava have co-produced a concert to celebrate the Centenary entitled “Visions from the Mediterranean” which brings together different Mediterranean voices in order to highlight the Mediterranean character of the Costa Brava. The performing artists are Joan Manuel Serrat, Noa, Maria del Mar Bonet, Franca Massu, Miguel Poveda, Gino Paoli and Savina Yannatou, accompanied by the Festival’s Orchestra, conducted by Joan Albert Amargós. The concert is held over two days (16th and 17th July) and strongly features singer-songwriters, the perfect embodiment of Mediterranean artistic expression, in a gathering of diverse and unique cultures which nevertheless have much in common.

The Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona is working together with the organisers of the Costa Brava’s music festivals, presenting this music programme as a unique chance to reach a knowledgeable local and international audience which is enthusiastic about music and culture.

The 11 musical nights of the Centenary contribute to increasing awareness of the event and also showcase the capacity of the Costa Brava’s towns and people to cater for the tastes of a culturally restless audience that spans more than one generation.
