Wikiloc Channel

The Costa Brava and Pirineu de Girona portal will incorporate its own Wikiloc.com channel to promote the area and its active tourism activities through the use of georeferenced trails.

The Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona and the Girona-based company Wikiloc Outdoor, S.L., which owns and manages the Wikiloc.com portal, are working on the project to implement the Wikiloc of the Costa Brava and the Pirineu de Girona, enabling the promotion of the counties of Girona through the use of georeferenced trails. Last weekend, the interactive channel for trails began operating on the official portal of the Costa Brava and Pirineu de Girona.

The Patronat de Turisme has decided to create its own channel to directly manage the more than 95 trails in the Girona area that have been georeferenced to date, while making them available to users from all over the world. Meanwhile, several local towns and tourism bodies, including Lloret de Mar, Roses, the county councils of La Selva and El Baix Empordà, and the Itinerannia trail network, among others, have joined up as Wikiloc.com users to offer routes from their respective areas.

The Patronat de Turisme is implementing the Wikiloc channel with two goals in mind: on the one hand, to continue the development of active tourism products in the territory through new technologies and, on the other hand, to provide website users and visitors to the destination with a new service and a new way of discovering activities in the Girona destination while fostering active tourism.

Wikiloc.com is a Girona-based website where hikers can find new georeferenced trails created and shared by users from all over the world. It offers them the possibility of creating and representing georeferenced trails, split into different categories and themes, and displaying points of interest of the area. The tool makes it possible to view the trails in different cartographic formats and in 3D (in Google Earth), to download routes onto GPS devices, to obtain additional trail information (such as the altitude profile, distance covered, accumulated altitude gain and loss or degree of difficulty), to add user comments and receive alerts, or to incorporate trail photos and videos.

As of March, Wikiloc contains 308,000 routes for hiking, cycling, kayaking and up to 35 different activities. It has received almost 1,000,000 unique monthly visits and is translated into18 languages.
