New Centenary wine: Cadac, by the Martín Faixó Winery

With the initial production of red wine sold out, the sommeliers of the Empordà DO decide to award the “Centenary Wine” label to the Cadac wine, by the Martín Faixó Winery in Perafita, considered a top quality product.

MARCH 2014

The Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona, together with the Empordà Denomination of Origin Regulatory Council, has chosen the Cadac wine by the Martín Faixó Winery in the Empordà area as a “Centenary Wine”. The red wine chosen initially by a group of expert sommeliers to commemorate the Centenary had already been sold out.

Cadac has been added to the list of wines chosen by the Empordà DO and labelled as Centenary Wines. These include the young white wine Floresta 2008 by the Pere Guardiola Winery and the Garnatxa Gran Reserva by the Cooperative Winery of Espolla. The red wine Cadac, by the Martín Faixó Winery, replaces the crianza vintage wine Puntiapart by the Lavinyeta Winery as a consequence of the latter being sold out.

These wines may accompany the Centenary menus offered by the restaurants involved in the campaign, although they are also suitable for other dishes. The Centenary Wines are mainly sold in restaurants and in specialised stores selling local products from the Girona area. Furthermore, the Patronat de Turisme uses part of the production for events, receptions and promotional functions that aim to publicise and raise the profile of the gastronomy of the Costa Brava, promoting the oenological quality of the destination.

In order to accompany the selection of dishes on the Costa Brava Menu, a group of expert sommeliers has selected the best Empordà DO wines of the following varieties: crianza vintage red wine, young white wine and dessert wine, all chosen using the criteria stipulated by the Regulatory Council.

The chosen wines display the name Centenary Wine, with a special label.
• Crianza vintage red wine: Cadac, by the Martín Faixó Winery in Perafita.
• Garnatxa variety from Empordà: Garnatxa Gran Reserva by the Espolla Cooperative Winery in Espolla.
• Young white wine: Floresta 2008 by the Pere Guardiola Winery in Capmany.

These wines are mainly sold in restaurants and in specialised stores selling local products from the Girona area.

  • Coupage: 80 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 20 % Red Garnatxa
  • Type of wine: red wine
  • Ageing time: 12 months in barrel
  • Crianza vintage (aged for two years, including one year of barrel ageing): Aged in medium-toasted French Allier oak barrels.
  • Bottle format: 750 ml bottle and 1,500 ml bottle
  • 750 ml bottle limited production: 6,120 bottles
  • 1,500 ml bottle limited production: 253 bottles
  • Tasting note:
Bigarreau cherry colour wine with deep red edge and high layer. Aromatically intense, with a hint of red fruit, toasted notes and with a mineral base that comes from the earth that feeds the vines. In the mouth it is broad, vigorous and firm. The tannins are potent but well-structured within the wine as a whole. In short, a surprising wine.
