MARCH 2014

The Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona presented the Centenary of the Costa Brava at Madrid’s Ritz Hotel on 21st April. At this event the gastronomy and chefs of the Costa Brava were named ambassadors of the Centenary of the Costa Brava. The Patronat de Turisme wished to acknowledge in this way their work and commitment in making Girona’s cuisine internationally renowned.

The event, during which the Centenary Menu was presented, was presided over by Enric Vilert, President of the Provincial Council of Girona and of the Patronat de Turisme. The actor Emilio Gutiérrez Caba was the Master of Ceremonies at the event, which was also attended by some of the chefs who have contributed to the gastronomic success of the area.

Almost 200 figures from the business, political, cultural and tourism sectors attended this event in which images of the Costa Brava transported guests to light-filled landscapes, with deep coves and beaches, enabling them to immerse themselves in the scenic, cultural, artistic and gastronomic richness of the counties of Girona.

During the event, guests tasted twelve of the forty dishes that make up the Costa Brava Menu, which forms the basis of the Centenary Menu. The Costa Brava Menu has been devised by Ferran Adrià, Joan Roca and Jaume Subirós, and is offered in more than 65 restaurants in the counties of Girona.

Some of the dishes that guests tasted were: bread with tomato and anchovies, sea urchins with black botifarra sausage, escalivada (grilled and peeled aubergine and red pepper) with anchovies, cod with raisins and hard-boiled egg, cap i pota (“head and foot” stew) with prawns, pig’s trotters with sea urchins, duck with pears, curds and honey, and fritters from l’Empordà, amongst others.

These ten dishes were prepared by chefs from three restaurants in the counties of Girona: Paco Pérez, chef of the Miramar restaurant in Llançà; Francisco Millán, from the Hotel Santa Marta in Lloret de Mar; Xavier Arrey, from the El Pati Verd restaurant in Girona; and by Oriol Blanes, Coordinator of the Aula Gastronòmica de l’Empordà and of the Costa Brava Menu.

The dishes were accompanied by the wines of the Centenary of the Costa Brava. The Floresta 2008 white wine from the Pere Guardiola winery, the Puntiapart red wine from the Lavinyeta winery and the Garnatxa Gran Reserva from the Espolla cooperative winery.
