Benchmark Ribera del Duero

18 professionals from the wine tourism sector, all members of the DO Empordà Wine Route Club, travel to Ribera del Duero.

MARCH 2014

A group of wine tourism professionals of the DO Empordà Wine Route Club, an initiative of the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board of Girona Provincial Council, went on a familiarisation trip in the Ribera del Duero area from 14th to 17th March to see the wine tourism product developed by the area, the Ribera del Duero Wine Route, which holds the Wine Route seal awarded by the ACEVIN (Spanish Association of Wine Cities). The trip focused on the involvement of both the public and private sector in the product.

Eight wine cellars, two museums, various wine-related accommodation establishments/restaurants and a wine therapy centre were visited during the four-day trip by technicians and managers of wine cellars (Mas Oller, La Vinyeta, Martín Faixó, Espelt, Peralada, Can Sais and Vinyes dels Aspres), specialised companies (SomVi and Viemocions), wine-related tourism accommodation establishments (Hotel Mas 1670 and Hostal Empúries), the president of the DO Empordà Regulatory Council, Josep Blanch, and technicians of the Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board. Some of the most noteworthy visits were to the Pago de los Capellanes and Protos cellars, along with the Las Ánimas underground cellar.

The familiarisation trip, scheduled as part of the 2013 Action Plan of the DO Empordà Wine Route Club, pursued several objectives: on the one hand, to see at first hand the marketing, promotional and sales strategies used by the company that manages the Ribera del Duero Wine Route, along with the various companies that have signed up to the initiative; and, on the other hand, to exchange ideas and strengthen ties between the members of the DO Empordà Wine Route Club in order to foster cooperation and improve the product itself.
