Bay of Roses

The towns of Roses, Castelló d’Empúries, Sant Pere Pescador and l’Escala are officially presented as one of "the most beautiful bays in the world"

MARCH 2014

On 14th September, the towns located within the Bay of Roses (Roses, Castelló d’Empúries, Sant Pere Pescador and l’Escala) were granted the official title that accredits their admittance into the club of "the most beautiful bays in the world", designated by UNESCO, a club made up of just 37 bays from all over the world.

Ten days later, representatives of the four towns held the official presentation of this award during a boat trip across the bay, for which they were joined by local tourism businesspeople and a group of international travel bloggers invited by the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona, who were on a blogtrip in Alt Empordà having attended the European TBEX conference held in Girona and on the Costa Brava.

The presentation was also attended by representatives of the four local councils and by the Vice President of Girona Provincial Council and of the Patronat de Turisme Costa Brava Girona. The guest bloggers disseminated the news through the social networks in which they operate, including GoSeeWrite, Nomadbiba, Skinnybackpacker, Spanishsabores, and @iPhilar on Instagram.

This is a distinction currently held by just 37 bays from all over the world. Only one bay is admitted per country and sea, which means that the Bay of Roses is the only bay that can boast this title on the Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula.

The Bay of Roses has been admitted into the club thanks to its many attractions and natural values: three natural parks, the ruins of Empúries, more than 45 kilometres of beaches (many of which hold EMAS European quality certification), the local gastronomy and great variety, along with the water, land and air sports on offer, etc.

At present, the four local councils involved are working on the creation of a common body that will enable them to develop joint actions under the name of the Bay of Roses with the goal of publicising the award internationally and drawing up a strategic sustainable tourism plan.
